Pickwick Lake - Counce, TN
Tackle Warehouse Invitationals
May 9th - 11th, 2025
For the fourth stop of the season we visited Pickwick Lake in Tennessee. We launched from Counce Tennessee, but the lake also goes into Alabama as well as Mississippi. During practice I concentrated on the middle portion of the lake which was about twenty miles from takeoff. Clarity in that region of the lake was about two feet and water temperatures where in the low 70’s. Quickly the first day of practice I was able to find a good shallow bite on topwaters as well as pitching a soft plastic to cypress bases. These fish were around the late spawn and some may have been fry guarders. There was some vegetation in the water, but many of the bites were wood related. Once I figured out how to catch them shallow I spent the majority of the remainder of my practice looking for shallow bars on the main river where a shad spawn was occurring. There were several different areas where I felt I could get them to bite. I was throwing around an eight foot diving crankbait and also a shakey head around some brush located on these bars. Going into the event I had a very productive practice and felt well about the upcoming tournament. Day one of the tournament I started on an offshore spot and was able to catch several short fish, but no keepers. After a few hours I decided to go shallow, but quickly realized they dropped the lake around six inches since practice. This really effected the shallow fish I had found. I was able to catch two keepers the first day on cypress bases pitching a plastic but that was it. Best thing I can figure is that since the start of practice many of these fish finished the spawn and moved to deeper water. Also many of them left these areas due to falling water. The second day I was able to start on my primary main river area, but when I arrived and dropped my trolling motor it wasn’t working. Since I was twenty miles up the lake I decided to just drop my power poles and fish for a while. I did catch several shorts and one keeper before heading back to have my trolling motor evaluated. The trolling motor had a problem with the cable running from the pedal to head of the unit. It couldn’t be repaired onsite so my day of catching fish came to an end. I finished up the event in 100th place with a two day total of 6-14.
